The Winnower was one of Jean-François Millet’s first paintings of rural labour, and depicts a peasant winnowing. This was the practice of removing chaff (the casings of grain seeds and other unwanted plant material) from harvested grain.

Renowned for his Realist subject matter, Jean-Francois Millet was moved by social injustice to paint peasants and agricultural laborers, capturing both the poverty and dignity of rural French life. “The human side of art is what touches me most,” he once said. Though the artist was considered a socialist revolutionary by much of the establishment, Millet’s painting The Winnower (1848 Jean-François Millet painted Hagar and Ishmael in the Desert in 1847-48, as he searched for biblical and historical themes that would support his interest in realistic figure painting and contemporary social problems. Millet was the second child of Jean-Louis-Nicolas and Aimee-Henriette-Adelaide Henry Millet, modest peasants who were part of a large extended family in the rural community of Gruchy. It immediately drew negative criticism from the middle and upper classes, who viewed the topic with suspicion: one art critic, speaking for other Parisians, perceived in it an alarming intimation of "the scaffolds of 1793."
